mixtape

in the mail

i joined a mixtape by mail group organized by my friends Nathan and Sam in summer of 2025 and have been painstakingly piecing together a mix. months later i’ve finally stitched it all together using youtubetomp3 and audacity. i figure it’d be a waste not to document it and share it here. the audio is direct from my mono Superscope C204

the sleeves are old construction paper with india ink drawings on each. the theme is the power of music - how you can feel it, how it can blow your mind, how it’s hard to describe… the dubbing was completed in real time on the old family onkyo. 5 copies were made but i keep offering to make more for friends beyond the mail group. many tracks didn't make the cut this time, so next time!

i decided to name the mix “I’m Listening (1)”

here’s one example - i used perhaps the most ubiquitous of blank tapes, the Maxell UR90. i unscewed the shell and removed the plastic slipsheet inside because it looks cooler without it.

each tape is equipped with a small comic illustrating how to torture a Nikko NR-719 stereo receiver, as is illustrated here in the safety manual. it’s very important everyone see/understand it.
